Not just a dry weather biker

What! When? Why?

La Randonnee du Centenaire, Paris Cycling is important to me for a number reasons. Initially it was physiotherapy after my motorbike accident but, in the last five years, it has developed into a real passion. This photo is of the Randonnee du Centenaire - ten thousand cyclists invited to ride around the streets of Paris on the final day of the 2003 Tour de France. You can't see me in the photo but I was there.

For years I used my old mountain bike (a non-suspension steel framed ton of a bike) but in 2001 I got a proper road bike - a Raleigh R200 (steel frame, 25lbs heavy). It was good enough to get me over the Col du Tourmalet (2115m) in the Pyrenees and the Col de la Madeleine (2000m) and Col de l'Iseran (2770m) in the Alps but in 2003, as a 'reward' for completing my MBA ("What did the rest of the family get?" - Anita) I pulled together a new toy, well new to me. A Trek 5200 carbon fibre frame, Campagnolo Record groupset, Mavic Kysrium wheels, and the contents of the bargain bins from various cycling e-shops. With an all up weight of 17lbs it flies. The first time I rode it was in Paris for the Randonee.(cont.)
